Attorney Gregory J. Gelpi

Some call me stubborn. I prefer determined. I bring a wealth of life experiences to the practice of law, experiences that made me who I am today. I have run three miles with two broken feet, been carjacked at gunpoint and survived a 12-hour encounter with a bear. While these experiences make for great stories, they also provide a glimpse into who I am and how I will relentlessly represent you when facing seemingly impossible odds.

I began my professional life as a newspaper reporter. In that role, I investigated, asked the tough questions, and held those in power accountable, much like I do today. For this work, I earned more than a dozen awards. I bring that same tenacity to the courtroom.

Most of my legal career was spent at the Augusta Circuit Public Defender’s Office. I served nearly nine years as an assistant public defender, defending hundreds of clients. It was never about the numbers; it was always about serving each client with the goal of leaving them in a better position than when I first met them. That begins with seeing clients as people, not cases, and it is rooted in good old-fashioned hard work. I pride myself on doing what it takes to get the job done, to get it done right, and to get it done right the first time.

While at the Public Defender’s Office, I served as the team leader in Juvenile Court and later as a team leader in Superior Court. It was here that I honed my skills as a trial attorney, successfully defending clients facing life sentences. I also effectively used by background as a writer getting a conviction vacated merely on a motion, found success at the appellate level and secured a unanimous opinion after arguing before the Supreme Court of Georgia. Although I cannot guarantee any particular outcome in your case, I welcome the opportunity to serve you and assist you in reaching your goals.
